The old car companies think what separates them from Tesla is that Teslas are electric. But they're also separated by the fact that Teslas are software, and that, they will discover, is an unbridgeable gulf.

The only question now is who will end up being the Android to Teslas Apple?

There's no reason to believe there will be one. Google focused on Android to prevent Apple cutting them off upstream. No one has that motivation in car software.

No opportunity to be a platform for all OEMS? Or should Tesla become that?

Agree that no one has that motivation in car software...yet. Cat's out of the bag now and the "Tesla is not a car company" narrative has been circulating for a while.

Uber has that motivation and just as Google was not a device manufacturer, they'd rather produce that mobility pf and distribute it to the car manufactuerers that will survive the ev+sw wave.

@Uber and @lyft will die as @Tesla robotaxi hits the market! Ride in a @Tesla vs a 2002 Civic or other person's crappy car!

Ironically, Apple’s CarPlay is sort of filling the “Android” role for cars at the moment. Even Lamborghinis support it, which says something about how insanely difficult it must be for these guys to develop good software/UI in-house.

CarPlay doesn’t fill the role if it’s just for infotainment. There’s infotainment, controls (air vents, etc), autopilot, & a lot of other software, I imagine, for things like running the Superbottle. I’d like to see some kind of list of everything software does in their cars.

Or maybe someone has that motivation, but only for the infotainment piece? But yeah, I can’t immediately see why Google would want to write software for the rest of the car systems.

Other than infotainment and autonomy, that is.
