The old car companies think what separates them from Tesla is that Teslas are electric. But they're also separated by the fact that Teslas are software, and that, they will discover, is an unbridgeable gulf.
But the difference isn't merely speed. Tesla's software is good. All other in-car software I've seen is appallingly bad.

A common problem that large companies (automakers especially so) use copious contracting / outsourcing firms to develop large parts of their software stack - and the outcome is seldom good

Exactly, like all VWs, Skoda's, Audi's etc use the same Bosche ECU. You can't innovate at speed when you're software & hardware cycles are so out of sync. And that's just the ECU, there's a ton of other sub-systems that suffer the same issue

And all outside of Tesla have infinitely un-upgradable software. They’ll get caught continuing to try to solve software problems with the old “buy a new car” hardware answer

The
#Chevrolet#Volt's UI is particularly bad, IMHO. On the plus side I'm pretty sure it runs on a 386x chip, so, at least it's almost able to reasonably handle a graphical interface.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
