Something I learned in the last 2-3 weeks of programming is that it pays to take time to think about structure before you start writing code. Taking the time to think about what your app needs and what the best structure is to meet those needs saves you big time in the future.

I have found that Java pays off only if you have some very clear architecture in mind. It doesn't really help you iterate faster, but it helps you develop infrastructure-level services in a well-defined way.

Haven’t gotten around to learning it yet, but I’ve heard Python is a more malleable language. Not sure if you agree.
