apart of "artistic style" is there any other explanation that's commonly stated? thinking of cheaper production / higher circulation count / survival bias (cheaper material) / etc ?
6th century France was technically and economically very backward compared to Augustan Rome.

Partly that conditions were worse in the later Empire. Partly that artistic traditions changed. Partly that the coins were made in different places (later = further east).
