Looking at my 7 yo, I asked myself if there was anything that had been consistent about my life from when I was 7 til now. Instantly the answer popped into my head: being told "How dare you say that!" by the prim and conventional-minded.

I feel like most inauthentic contrarianism comes with respect to popular art - music, TV, movies - where someone seems to be overtly building an identity around not being like "the herd." (e.g., "not watching the dragon show tonight guys" -> SEND TWEET)
