Sometimes I wonder at what point a celebration of the contrarian and unorthodox violates the “keep your identity small” ethic.

Presumably at the point where you say something because it's contrarian, rather than because it's true and only incidentally contrarian.

I often hear from people that my essays helped them, but beyond that you never know. That's the weird thing about writing: it can have great effects (is mightier than the sword, etc), but it's not "haptic" to the degree most other kinds of work are.

Interesting that you thought of a consistency with yourselves in relation to other people. Did you later think of one that was just about yourselves? For me the first thing that comes to mind is a consistent activity: playing video games. Sometimes ones I played when I was 7, too
