I remember as a freshman in college desperately hunting down quiet places to work. I probably cared about it before that, but it wasn't so obvious because the house I grew up in was quiet enough.

For me it’s specifically unnecessary noise. Anything that is louder than it absolutely has to be. Loud chewing, honking horns, car alarms, tapping etc. I think it really comes down to a sense of rudeness.

Noise cancelling earbuds are great. Wear them on the street, the mall, the airport. We get used to so much background noise that affects us but that we are unaware of.

I agree. I used these earmuffs rated at 31db to block out noise in an open office workspace. It didn’t work until I used headphones underneath these playing low volume white noise (music is distracting for me). I now rent a quiet office and rarely need them.pic.twitter.com/P4fKmOyTbv
