Zoom just worked on first try. I previously tried Skype, http://Daily.co etc but fell in love with zoom instantly

Any patterns you see between what made Zoom and Dropbox become the winners in their prospective space?

I don't know Zoom well enough to say, but what made Dropbox succeed was that it was the first file syncing service that actually worked.

Why didn't Skype or Telepresence win the in office conf system race?

The frustration of big company acquisitions— first eBay then Microsoft. Same thing happened at Hotmail. Post acquisition, the product roadmap died and the leaders left. In the case of Skype, eBay bowed to telco pressure (https://flic.kr/p/6fCBrP ) & MSFT Passport ruined login.
