Needed some code from On Lisp yesterday and happened to read a chunk of it. If you've ever wondered whether, after someone writes a book, the stuff in the book is in their head ever after, the answer is definitely no.

It's been so long since I wrote it that I can almost read it the way someone else would. And basically it's in the category of books where the author seems to know what he's talking about, but cares more about more boring details than I ever will. Which is really weird.

Incidentally, I wrote On Lisp on legal pads mostly. I didn't have my own computer then. Computers were in offices and labs, and I couldn't write there. So I'd write a few pages at a time and then type it in next time I was at a computer.

I still find that the best way to memorize things (writing it down then typing it up)

Then the revolution came. Paul, opinions on whether being forced to write on paper made things better? Sometimes I feel like handwriting makes me seed ideas deeper into my brain, curious to see your thoughts

This is how I wrote my first LOGO program. The school had a C64 which I only had access to once a week.

This is the real roots of code. We should thank what we have today, no matter what computer shit we have (like my PC). Waiting five minutes it's better then wait for your next access to the office.

Do you feel like that made you think more about the code? Not having the ability to iterate real-time.

Retyping an essay is like code reviewing yourself. I wouldn't be surprised if it increased the quality. John Cleese hints at this in his talk "How To Be Creative" https://vimeo.com/176474304

This probably worked better in unexpected ways, did you do that with H&P too?
