Needed some code from On Lisp yesterday and happened to read a chunk of it. If you've ever wondered whether, after someone writes a book, the stuff in the book is in their head ever after, the answer is definitely no.

It's been so long since I wrote it that I can almost read it the way someone else would. And basically it's in the category of books where the author seems to know what he's talking about, but cares more about more boring details than I ever will. Which is really weird.

Incidentally, I wrote On Lisp on legal pads mostly. I didn't have my own computer then. Computers were in offices and labs, and I couldn't write there. So I'd write a few pages at a time and then type it in next time I was at a computer.

Like googling an especially readable article and only some way in to discover that you were the author of the piece

then do you think the author should publish a new edition?

People change. Whenever I read stuff I wrote ages ago (code, blogpost, etc) I criticize my past self :)

skipping through the text to read the code bits? and maybe headlines to find where the code bit might be? :)

Just checked my bookshelf. I still have a German version of "ANSI common Lisp" from 1997. Some day you have to sign it for me. ;-)

Strong case for really capturing one’s ideas in writing since our paradigms, understanding, and focus change throughout time. Thanks for the inspiration, PG!

I like reading my own old texts. Probably for these reasons.

I making my way through Hackers and Painters, which I find thought provoking, though I find myself often disagreeing with it - I wonder what your retrospective on that book would be today as the author of the book? Many things have changed since you wrote it
