We should nix the word "obviously" from conversation. It doesn't add anything besides making people feel bad if they weren't aware beforehand. Plus, a lot of things are "obvious" once heard, but it's being made *aware* of it at a relevant time that's important.

Proposals to ban words are often mistaken, and this is in that category. "Obviously" is a widely useful word. Among other things, it's a way to qualify the surprisingness of a fact, and that's valuable when talking about ideas. "Obviously x. But also y. And surprisingly, z."

Hmmm, dunno Paul. Someone wise once told me that if it's truly obvious it needn't be said, and if it isn't truly obvious labelling it so is no use to anyone/borderline insulting. Agree about not banning words but I'd counter your example works fine without the "obviously" part.

See, I disagree here. If you remove the word ‘obviously’ the sentence and its emphasis on the surprisingness of z suffers not one bit. ‘Obviously,’ by definition, doesn’t carry new information. It’s not useless, it’s just not that helpful and has an air of condescension.

Proposals to ban or limit arguments are also misguided. Arguing is incredibly useful when practised by open-minded people.

Agree with @shl - ‘obviously’ is not a high-quality word and is often found in condescending contexts. I believe @paulg’s disagreement is based in his perspective. If he had been a sub-management level employee at any point in the past 10 years, he might feel differently.
