It's not uncommon in the startup world for a new idea to be dismissed by know-it-alls simultaneously with growing rapidly among early adopters. I'm not sure why, but these ideas seem to do even better than the ones that aren't dismissed by know-it-alls.

Perhaps the reason is that these ideas seem to the know-it-alls not merely unpromising but also presumptuous, and since risk is proportionate to reward, a presumptuous idea that actually works is likely to pay off big.

I realize "know-it-alls" is a goofily retro term, but it's apt here, because you'd need to be God to dismiss startup ideas confidently. It's not because I'm extra polite that you don't hear me doing it. It's because I have enough experience to know how dangerous it is.

"I don't think there's anyone that'll like to use that application" - that's what a pitch competition judge told me. I said well, we'll launch and see.

Guilty. A friend approached me about starting an online DTC tire company 10 years ago. I laughed, too many questions, too many 'how will people...???', lots of 'no way it will work'. http://Tirerack.com  did ~$1.5B last year.

I'm still waiting for the one set of minds at the top who want to cleanse the corrupted global system and unite humanity around a new Cosmic Narrative for all peoples to thrive and co-create. Ready to execute the impossible when you are.pic.twitter.com/5gmvl1ikwZ

This is all true. Yet it’s also not uncommon for people to claim ideas are valid because they are opposed by “establishment”. It’s neither good nor bad that ideas are opposed. Rather, some are hood despite opposition. Many times the opposition is right, tho.

some ideas don't require omniscience to dismiss. Example: a startup (Prometheus) promising to convert CO2 into gasoline can be easily dismissed by any highschooler who was actually paying attention in science class (regardless of who else might think it's a hot idea

I’ve lived it for 10 years in the Athletic performance industry. Just now the tide is turning. The narrow minded hide behind “Reaearch says...”. Fuck the research, does it make sense? No one can think. Developers like me go crazy because of the narrow minded ways of others.
