It's not uncommon in the startup world for a new idea to be dismissed by know-it-alls simultaneously with growing rapidly among early adopters. I'm not sure why, but these ideas seem to do even better than the ones that aren't dismissed by know-it-alls.

I realize "know-it-alls" is a goofily retro term, but it's apt here, because you'd need to be God to dismiss startup ideas confidently. It's not because I'm extra polite that you don't hear me doing it. It's because I have enough experience to know how dangerous it is.

A general attitude of "everyone knows you don't do that" raises the social cost of doing something so reduces the number of people pursuing that solution. When someone just does it they face an empty field and thus have higher growth rates than when there is some competition

love this phenomenon, when i’ve experienced it it feels like a meme. everyone ‘understands’ it and is energized to choose a side some get upset and some fall in love

Also, something that requires a know-it-all to change their world view (which they won't) is probably a new way of looking at things. Then early adoption indicates it isn't just a new 'bad' way of looking at things :).

Could be other reasons too. I saw an early pitch by
@airwallex to an angel group. It sucked. The angel group declined to proceed. Now on track for

How do you minimize that from happening at YC?

Care more about the founders than the idea.

Perhaps it's because there is an element of luck involved, and "know it alls" fall into a trap of thinking the rules are the same as when they played the game and won.

I think when people say “it’ll never work” it often means they don’t want it to work (for various reasons). The more emotional the response, the more it indicates the idea is connected to something significant.
