It's not uncommon in the startup world for a new idea to be dismissed by know-it-alls simultaneously with growing rapidly among early adopters. I'm not sure why, but these ideas seem to do even better than the ones that aren't dismissed by know-it-alls.

Perhaps the reason is that these ideas seem to the know-it-alls not merely unpromising but also presumptuous, and since risk is proportionate to reward, a presumptuous idea that actually works is likely to pay off big.

I realize "know-it-alls" is a goofily retro term, but it's apt here, because you'd need to be God to dismiss startup ideas confidently. It's not because I'm extra polite that you don't hear me doing it. It's because I have enough experience to know how dangerous it is.

I’d say if you analysed it statistically, <1% of ideas dismissed by investors go on to success.

Cognitive dissonance? I.e. experts will fight a solution that obsoletes the solution that they're committed to, but no fight = no previous need big enough to generate an earlier solution = questionable value of new solution?

Vociferous opposition often co-occurs with insecurity. Powerful ideas are threatening to someone in power, and that someone has a strong motive to browbeat them down. Put another way, if an idea doesn't upset anyone's status quo, it probably isn't that consequential.
