When I was 20 I tried to estimate the number of important books. There were more than one could read in a lifetime. So I decided I'd start with the fun ones.

White is great. I don't agree with all of his conclusions (e.g. https://benlandautaylor.com/2019/01/31/no-one-can-explain-the-dominance-of-cavalry/ …), but it's very rare to find someone who's both making good arguments about macro trends and also stays so close to the specific historical evidence.

I picked up this book many years ago after learning about it in one of your essays. It was a fascinating book - even just the discussion about the impact of the stirrup on warfare is enough to blow your mind and make you see the world differently! Thanks for the recommendation!

I read it on Paul’s recommendation a while ago. Just as fascinating as how the early farming technology impacted the size of farms, towns etc was how they pieced this all together across written and archaeological records.
