"Capitalism is killing the planet" is a thing that tons of people like to say on Twitter, but is it true? Would a non-capitalist system cause less climate change? Here's a picture of the CO2 emissions per capita of Bolivia, an economically successful socialist country:pic.twitter.com/bhvzeieB3P

IIRC the USSR was an environmental disaster. What they probably mean is that industrialization is killing the planet. But if we went back to the childhood mortality rates of preindustrial times, it would be heartbreaking.

This is a strawman. The argument is against the idea of infinite growth, which was assumed by every self-described capitalist I have met so far. Other people I know, who are not capitalists, believe in a less centralized governance with more care for our environment. It's not B/W

Capitalism is not a prescribe economic model, it’s a described economic model. Whether you like it or not, capitalism happens. Even in communism, capitalism happens — the benefits are returned to the state and not the individual.

You're both off point imo. The problem with Capitalism in regards to environmental destruction is 1) Capitalism does not pay (or even care) for negative externalities, and 2) capital requires infinite growth to stay alive, which inevitably depletes finite resources.

"1) Capitalism does not pay (or even care) for negative externalities" Who/what does? "2) capital requires infinite growth to stay alive, which inevitably depletes finite resources." In the same time the overall competition and information technologies incentivize to take less.

We've plowed through every supposedly catastrophic Malthusian barrier thrown in our way by thoughtpieces before. I see no good reason to think we'll suddenly stop doing so

Private property and return-on-investment are necessary for a market economy, which is the only kind of economy that actually works. The problem is UNREGULATED capitalism which generates extreme inequality. Capitalism is thus compatible with socialism - in fact necessary for it!

Equally important to see is who's operating the power plants, oil rigs, etc. who are responsible for those emissions. I don't know for Ecuador, but in Eastern Europe, there are only 4 companies who own everything, and none of them are local.
