Why do they want to leave? Housing costs, or more than that?

Anecdotally, I thinks it’s more than that. Even commuting to SF from San Mateo, where rent is similar, has worn on me. Not the commute itself nearly as much as the destination. Unbearable inequality everywhere. It’s hard here not just on the bank account but also on the soul.

Did anyone mention they feel less safe here comparing to other US cities? That would be a factor for me, I lived outside of the US most of my live though.

Are they ready to take a salary cut? Except for maybe NYC companies pay less elsewhere. Plus it’s much easier to find and switch jobs in SF because of the demand. That means someone who settles in SF won’t have to relocate unlike someone in say Dallas upon switching jobs.

It’s expensive, accommodations can be cramped, it’s fast-paced- like a Ferrari. Plenty of people reach a point in their life when they want lower prices, more space, a slower pace- to trade in the sports car for a Honda or Toyota. And they will be replaced, the cycle continues.
