We should all be careful about moral panics over tech, but I have been conducting two semi-open-source lit reviews which, so far, support the claims made in video: rising depression, for girls mostly, and some link to social media:https://www.thecoddling.com/better-mental-health …

An interesting story is emerging in the lit reviews: It's not so much "screen time" for "all teens," that is bad; it's specifically social media for girls. If you are a researcher who disagrees with that story, please request access and add your critiques.

Gaming. Boys love it because it channels their drive for creating and accomplishing, but provides little real world benefits

Eh. Played lots of Quake growing up. Spurred my desire to build then monetize a forum for gamers in college/learn to code. Eventually ended up in tech sector / working at Google (they're pretty successful I hear). Everything in moderation is likely OK. Sorry for the n=1 trial.

Not having enough male adult role models to guide them. Adversity, toughness, learning to be caring, thoughtful and respectful are all lessons that are best taught by a strong figure they look up to.

There is an absolute dearth of guidance for boys learning to be men, and it's such a tragedy imo. They're just left to their own, and the damage caused by a lack of space for safe development has huge knock on effects on society.https://twitter.com/SuMastodon/status/1112903427250679808?s=19 …

Not knowing how to accept and integrate lessons from female role models (e.g. science, tech, adventure). Leads to a weird bubble. Online: interactions that amplify anxiety, leading to isolation.
