That really does mean a lot to me to hear. Far to often I dwell on the sadness at the end of my tenure at Slashdot and not the really meaningful stuff we did in the first decade. I really appreciate the reminder. It was really important to me too.
Slashdot was why I started writing essays. I put a pdf of a talk online and it got on Slashdot and thousands of people read it. That was when I realized you didn't need to get stuff published in magazines or newspapers to reach readers. So thanks Rob!
Y Combinator in turn grew out of those essays, and a lot of big startups have grown out of YC. So Slashdot had a huge effect on the world.

Yes, another thanks from me Rob. While I'm in the rough-and-tumble world of startups in San Francisco now, Slashdot is what got me into tech: I was a 10th grader growing up in Oman in 1998 when I discovered it.
