When information travels at the speed of a horse, representative democracy isn’t very democratic. Each advance in information technology has moved us closer to pure democracy. Including social media.

Exactly! If the achievable level of democracy is a function of the time it takes for information to reach participants, then it makes sense that only city states in the past could have pure democracies. I bet information now travels globally faster than it did within Athens.
