The nuclear plant shutdowns - especially by the same people who care about the environment is the most depressing for me. No one's discounting the long term effects of nuclear. However, in the short-medium term it'll save so many lives.

In countries like India, the quality of life is markedly down due to emissions from coal plants. I know it because I have lived near one. I still have asthma because of it. But because the deaths and health effects are scattered, the magnitude doesn't register.

• Airline fatalities: creation of FAA (impeccable safety record) • Meat spoilage & snakeoil meds: FDA and food regulations (no more medicines with radium and no more sick cow steaks) • Drunk driving laws • Catholic sex abuse scandal: better safeguards, mandatory reporter laws

None of those were knee-jerk reactions to black swan events, they were trying to treat chronic conditions.

No, nuclear plants are not about energy only. Raise awareness, invest in renewables, maximize efficiency, implement ADR, deploy storage, buy EV cars, use bicycles, eat less meat, recycle waste and do NOT ignore! or eat fish from fukushima with micro plastics in & smoked with GHG
