Who'd have thought that if people could choose their own news, they'd choose the stories that made them angry? We take it for granted now, but it really is surprising. Cynical editors used to think "if it bleeds, it leads" was as low as you could go. But people like anger more.

There might also be some status games in place. The newspaper was a physical accessory used for signaling, so the content didn’t have to be something you’d read.

Gawker(and the Jezebel vertical) were very influential in NY media circles, with some of their alumni even going to work for the NYT & New Yorker. That's another driver of the change. I certainly hope they've lost control of the narrative, 'cause they have really gone downhill.
