Who'd have thought that if people could choose their own news, they'd choose the stories that made them angry? We take it for granted now, but it really is surprising. Cynical editors used to think "if it bleeds, it leads" was as low as you could go. But people like anger more.

TV is not newspaper... Actually if someone today subscribes to 5 newspapers considering the current ad-funded Internet model, that's even more impressive...

On their deathbed who among us will lament that they didn’t read enough news?

The medium is important. Newspapers did not allow people to attack others from the comfort of their home, anonymously behind a keyboard. Some people seek this out , and the stories that incite anger provide opportunity for confrontation.

Do you think news quality deteriorated or we realized how bad it it? Either newspapers can’t control the conversation anymore, and the perspective on them shifted. Or the quality of reporting and incentives structures deteriorated

Good point. Some of each.

A newsfree family here, may be we are creating a bubble for our child (don’t really know). Over the years we felt that work/read/play/hike/cook/sleep can be done in a more efficient way if there is no tv/news. It works great for now not sure what lies ahead.

What they learned from the Russian disinformation campaign is that there was a great deal of confirmation bias with people that voted on the right, and far right.

It starts by peddling fear. Stage 1: A Caravan is coming to kill you! Stage 2: The Dems are doing nothing to stop it! Stage 3: Soros is paying for it! Stage 4: Q God help us all.

A year ago, I cut my news consumption by 90%. I mostly get the news from friends or FB/twitter, and it’s been great. Most news is just noise!

You run the echo chamber risk with that approach :)
