"bear the risk" - also known as being privileged in ways such as: your parents will financially support you if you don't have money, you can get another job easily because of social connections, you don't have anyone relying on you for financial support, etc

Yeah, I remember interviewing at a YC company and the founder explicitly said he thought I was too old to work enough, asked if I was married, and if I had kids as they would be a no-go. (And not talking about the place I ended up at, they were awesome)
