After almost every essay I've written, people have said I've jumped the shark. Then after we started YC people would constantly say it about YC. The phenomenon puzzled me for years before I realized it was simply the form disagreeing was forced into when you were good.
I had a similar realization about Viaweb's growth graphs. Steep bits would be interspersed with flat bits. Why the flat bits? Eventually I realized I was looking at the sum of two functions: growth + random variation. Flat is the shape down is forced into when you're growing.
stupid q: how did you process payments back then?
Alternative theory on the flat bits, couldn't those also be when the drivers for the steep bits were being developed...?
