If you're good at something, people will constantly say you've jumped the shark. If you do something they disagree with, but they know you were good in the past, then either (a) they're wrong or (b) you suddenly got bad. They can't choose (a) so they're forced to conclude (b).

I had a similar realization about Viaweb's growth graphs. Steep bits would be interspersed with flat bits. Why the flat bits? Eventually I realized I was looking at the sum of two functions: growth + random variation. Flat is the shape down is forced into when you're growing.

Bret Easton Ellis wrote this great line in Lunar Park: ~ "being famous means you're always letting somebody down". I think this is similar.

People are always going to hate. The more successful you are, the more haters you have. They are tightly correlated.

I think when people disagree with you, and the response is unusually emotional, it’s a pretty good sign you’re undermining some profound belief they have in the world. Stephen Wolfram calls it a consequence of paradigm-changing work. https://blog.stephenwolfram.com/2012/05/living-a-paradigm-shift-looking-back-on-reactions-to-a-new-kind-of-science/ …pic.twitter.com/4qzD5mKOLu

I got a message midnight that how Nook is trying to solve an already solved prob and how users should go to her facility instead of using Nooks. It was a nervous moment but I had to reply, but till then I am thinking why this? This is first time its happening and its weird.

I’ve had multiple experiences in my life where I take on big challenges and am constantly told “you aren’t ready, wait a few more years and get more experience first” and ironically it always come from people who never seem to have the courage to tackle big challenges.

I think the emotional response they have to my willingness to challenge myself comes from deep within themselves, so much so that they don’t even recognize they are likely upset with themselves for not doing the things they wish to do.
