After almost every essay I've written, people have said I've jumped the shark. Then after we started YC people would constantly say it about YC. The phenomenon puzzled me for years before I realized it was simply the form disagreeing was forced into when you were good.

I had a similar realization about Viaweb's growth graphs. Steep bits would be interspersed with flat bits. Why the flat bits? Eventually I realized I was looking at the sum of two functions: growth + random variation. Flat is the shape down is forced into when you're growing.

I think you should just say that "jumping the shark" is sometimes good. And usually you don't know until after jumping, or even if you do, other people don't.

Big ideas are scary. Only natural that people protect their small ideas (and egos).

That's why it's important to remember your bad judgement in the past. In 2010, when I heard about DST's Facebook deal with $10B valuation, I thought it was stupidly high. I'll never forget that moment, and often recall it when I get similar instinctive reaction nowadays.

Technically it was a bad valuation. The only way they were able to make money long term is the road they took, which has been a net negative for the planet. But if your only goal is wealth without empathy, then have at it.

I did have to google what jumping the shark meant but now that I understand it, this is correct I kind of like when people make this argument though because you get to keep being the underdog/there’s less pressure and proving people wrong is one of the best feelings!pic.twitter.com/ON9zJ7OtDX
