Unpopular career advice: speaking at conferences is a massive waste of time Seems cool when you’re young But creating a new deck takes time Talks have low recall & rarely lead to followers, subscribers, etc. Better to focus on compounding activities: write, build something

Totally. I’ve found that the demands of putting together a presentation can help dramatically organize/accelerate a narrative I’m already developing. It might be the most rewarding consequence.

Speaking at conferences is good as a mean to something else. It's a tool, not a goal in itself. Then it's invaluable. People who just do it for vanity, do it wrong and very often do not provide good value to an audience.

I *typically* do it the other way around; I give talks based on posts I've written (usually aggregating a few)

Just to make sure I understand your point: a talk can be viewed as a performed essay. Writing an essay before a talk can 1), help one prepare for a talk, and, 2) be a good motivator to produce high-quality written content.

Very true - typically each slide could easily become its own blog post.

It’s also good as a way to generate leads for tech infrastructure products. Most cos in the space have almost identical marketing messages & talks by experts can be a great way to share actual technical differentiators. I’ve generated six figure plus deals through this method.
