This whole frame is sad. Rich is, at best, such an incomplete aspiration.

Of course it's incomplete. I nowhere suggested that being rich = living well.

Unlike admiration, it's impossible to turn envy into motivation. You can only get unhappiness out of it.
-
I think the envious get a sort of grim satisfaction if they can bring down some individual or group that they envy. Maybe the way to phrase it is that envy can never motivate you to create, only to destroy.

I've had the opposite experience. Most of the junior VCs I met a decade ago were aggrieved, calling specific senior VCs unintelligent, lazy and undeserving, and now they're almost all rich
-
Of course people often resent their bosses (or senior partners in partnerships). I'm not talking about the edge case where people are upset that specific individuals they dislike are rich, because that's driven by their dislike of those people, not their attitude to wealth.

What about attitudes to people who inherit wealth without having done anything; can people be aggrieved at them being rich whilst being happy about people creating their own wealth by their own efforts?

Empirically the people I've met who went on to become rich weren't bothered by people who inherited money. You'd have to resent people who won the lottery too...

This is a correlary to your “don’t mind competitors” tweet. You change the world by minding and tending your own garden.
