When investors ask you questions about your company, don't begin with "so." It's a tell that you're about to emit prefabricated sentences, and those never hold the other person's attention like actual conversation.

using “so…” as a filler or sentence preface is predominately a valley/west coast/american idiosyncrasy. particularly with valley girls and also somehow with tech bros.

Consider that someone may be “retrieving it from memory” not because they’ve rehearsed lines but because they’ve answered similar questions many times before and are assembling an answer best suited to the context & audience. (When marketing my projects, I do this all the time!)

Interesting. I think it could also be used to attempt to signal confidence in what one is about to say - like “I am certain about the answer to your question” But like any form of signalling, it can backfire due to countersignalling

I use “so” a lot in interviews at the start of sentences when I’m thinking. I viewed it as a filler like “um”. Now I’m trying to think if it’s more “retrieval” for me than just filler.

“So” => cache / DB “Um” => CPU Hmm

Tremendous amount of respect for you 99.9 percent of the time Paul but focusing on someone using the word “so”? Seems beneath you. People have all sorts of ways of expressing themselves.

Was just making my demo version and all I said was “uh”. I was like, wtf, why do I keep saying “uh”. Makes sense now. After a few takes, the “uh’s” disappeared.

Paul, this is a pretty extreme claim for a a distinction as arbitrary as this... Smells a lot like confirmation bias, and while this may be your preference (all filler words are objectively weak argumentatively), it’s weird to tout this difference as fact.
