In writing, there are some problems for which there's no good general rule (whether to write 3 or three, when to capitalize) and the only solution is sleight of hand.

Yes - the purpose of a writing rule is clarity. If a rule fails its purpose, break it. Good writing is easy to understand.

Why aren't they good? For me, there is one reason - it is hard to remember them because there is no answer to why do we have this rule.

I've heard this rule too, but there are times it just doesn't work. Typing "3" in an email to a colleague where numbers are important just seems a lot better than writing out "three".

Also in some cases with multiple numbers: "ranging from 3 to 124" looks better than "ranging from three to 124"
