Hypothesis: Cities should be designed to prioritize (individual) travel in inverse proportion to speed. E.g. give walking priority over cycling and cycling priority over driving. Maybe even give sitting priority over walking.

New York is a good test case- everyone loves walking, subways at peak usage with room to optimize

I have walked (and have seen others walk) faster in NY than cycling or even buses. Paul's point is about speed, note mode per se.

1/ Control: Hard to switch on/off so pick 2 cities with similar traits. Ensure nothing else changes during trial, e.g. jobs/salaries. Metric: Never by surveys. Can think of it as a product. If its enjoyable, it will go “viral” and new ppl want to move and existing people stay.

2/ I can think of one large confounder: whether basic needs are met. Humans would do not enjoy slowing down if short term survival is threatened.

Optimizing in that way is optimal for upper middle class and above but regression for the shrinking middle class and blue collar that work in the city.

You’re fighting against the competing optimization, that is, to make more money. (My favorite stat: average walking speed in a city is correlated with GDP)
