"Moderate" is what you get called when you're uncompromising about doing the right thing, rather than being uncompromising about your ideological orthodoxy.

Separating “the right thing” and ideology is a rhetorical sleight of hand. “Moderate” is just as much of a ideological orthodoxy as “extreme.”

Sure, some people take the middle course as a matter of principle. But if there are two different factions and each is right half the time, then someone who always chooses the right thing will also end up in the middle. The former is a sort of ideology, but not the latter.

Again there is no “right thing” outside of political ideology (morality.) Moderate is what you’re called when your ideology lines up with the one doing the calling.

I think moderates may also question the idea that the two different factions are each right half of the time.

There's nothing inherently "wrong" abt making a single mom work 3 jobs w/ zero time for kids. U can always make the argument she should work smarter not harder or married right or "picked herself up w/ her bootsraps". There is nothing inherently "right" abt single payer med.

I highly doubt each is guaranteed to be right half the time. It only works out when your two choices are dogmatic in different domains. If they both become dogmatic on the same issues, then good ideas just won't exist in the general conversation.

By that token, if there are two different factions and one is right 100% of the time, then someone who always chooses the right thing will be labeled an extremist. People are labeled moderate when they are in between the two factions no matter where “right” is.
