I am confident that artificial general intelligence will be developed. I take a little bit of pride in the fact that GPUs originally designed for first person shooter games are critical infrastructure in the research towards it.

I don't know, I think I've fooled a fair amount of humans.

Unless they are just being polite.

I have very high confidence that programs will be able to match humans at the Turing Test within 50 years, but "mimic human" will be an odd game for them to play. I tend towards optimistic, but I think 50/50 we will see AGI in < 20 years.

Do you think we can create an AGI by developing it directly, or as an emergent property of the evolution of virtual creatures in a emulated reality that we create using strong computers?

It's always 20-30 years away. Short enough to sustain funding, long enough to avoid accountability.
-
Do you not think that the last several years have been both qualitatively and quantitatively different than previous decades?

Turing test is a rather naive approach to scoring intelligence :-) Imho, an intelligence is an ability to infer logic and then create new logical constructs,+ the machinery to make this happen within limited resources (abstraction, compression, relations etc)
-
as such, one could score intelligence by the number of these elements an intelliycan operate on. Also, one could calculate engineering effort and time required to build intelligences with given properties.

Doubt either of you will be *too* difficult to fool in ~50 years...

@singularity_net’s team under the guidance of@bengoertzel is already developing the foundation for the emergence of a benevolent and democratic AGI in the near future, hopefully it will be in the next 5-10 years.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
