People have little loyalty to meat per se. If you made something that was cheaper and tasted better, most carnivores would switch. Once that shift started, social pressure against eating meat would grow rapidly. It would seem, and in fact would be, perverse.

The problem is that it needs to be several hundred different “somethings”. I tried an Impossible burger recently & thought it was pretty good. But it doesn’t replace a steak, or anchovies on a pizza, or proper chicken soup, or venison, or the worm in a bottle of mescal

We don't even know what food does in a body in any complete sense. Thus, replacing things like meat that we've evolutionarily adapted to want/need might take longer than we suppose. Once we actually understand completely what food does, can we even think about replacing it.

Among health authorities it has been the consensus for decades that you can be healthy eating no meat at all.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19562864

Sure. You can also be healthy without coffee, music or single-malk Scotch whisky. We can safely assume that much of the planet isn't masochistic enough for those choices. If meat consumption is to be reduced, it needs to be replaced with something either identical, or better

Paul I suggest you ponder the gap of what may be optimal here. (Perhaps also what consensus for healthy has wrought.)http://www.diagnosisdiet.com/vegan-diets-and-the-brain/ …

Following heath authority consensus appears to have driven the obesity epidemic. When did you start following the consensus of authorities?

Govt authorities also touted high carb, high sugar diets with their food pyramid which has led to an obesity epidemic. Of course, perhaps a billion people eat a vegetarian diet but those folks (my genetic relatives) also have alarmingly high rates of heart disease & diabetes.

Next-gen vegetarians won't be as health-conscious/educated as elective vegetarians/vegans. They will eat processed foods in larger proportions than ever. Can you name an industrially-produced food invented in the last century whose heath benefits haven't yet been discredited?

The health consensus has also been wrong for decades with regards to saturated fat and grain based food pyramid.

For decades there was also a consensus among ‘health authorities’ that smoking wasn’t a problem. The science was there but the authorities took time to accept it.
