People have little loyalty to meat per se. If you made something that was cheaper and tasted better, most carnivores would switch. Once that shift started, social pressure against eating meat would grow rapidly. It would seem, and in fact would be, perverse.

I'll warn you in advance, though, that the switch will probably increase rather than decrease economic inequality. The replacements for meat will be created by startups, which means more Bezoses, and will simultaneously put lots of small farmers out of business.

I think this ignores the cultural cachet of "real" meat, and the fact that the price declines for lab- or fake-meat are gradual, not suddenly much cheaper than animal-meat. It'll take a couple years for it to get cheaper and better, climb to ~50% mkt share in the US, then stall.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1099648921180217345 …

It hasn’t happened in the diamond industry. Man made diamonds of identical quality can now be bought for a fraction of the price. If people will not give up there (real) diamonds why would they give up their (real) meat?

A lot of (Dutch) children already have this changed mindset; they are aware of the drawbacks and often try to convince their meat-loving parents (like myself) to switch to alternative options. This is happening very fast indeed and you might be right.
