How do you make the things you care about less boring to other people?

Tell people what's surprising about them. Surprisingness translates pretty well. E.g. I don't care about model trains, but I'd care if they were invented by accident, or depended on some specific technology to work, or if model train aficionados were demographically surprising.

I love how surprises can be spotted in the origins; the counter-intuitive way something works, or was built/founded; an incidental effect; a small thing that has a great aggregate effect; a profound stepping stone to new avenues of discovery; a hidden ubiquity influencing life.
