The universe might be less than 10,000 years old. We don't know how it was created or really anything about it, it could have been created with all of the history. But we do observe obvious differences among people, religious fundamentalists don't think there are no differences.

The rest believe it's older. They don't understand it's older. They believe, on the authority of someone else.

Understanding science is not "believing on the authority of someone else". And even if it was, believing an actual authority with evidence is still far more reasonable than believing an imagined authority against all evidence.
