Watch how "Startups in 13 Sentences" got written. I wrote it using an editor written by a YC startup called Stypi, and replay was one of its features. The text with yellow background will eventually be deleted. http://byronm.com/13sentences.html …

Which is a good counterargument incidentally to people who say "why do you need privacy if you've done nothing wrong?" Anyone who does any kind of creative work has something to hide: their early drafts.

Usually I found that the total amount of text that I write for a post, including the "deleted" text, is actually around 2x/3x times more than what I actually publish at the end. Makes you wonder how direct conversations can sometimes go in the wrong way then.

that was my question. It seems to force you to think in another meta dimension of not just writing for the end result but how now the process of driving to the final sentence is perceived.

Does this apply as a downside to version control systems like git

In high school, a friend and I improvised violin duets. Occasionally we would produce something good, only to lose it immediately. But recording everything paralyzed us, for fear of recording a mistake.

We eventually decided what we actually wanted was a ninja hiding in the ceiling, secretly recording everything without our knowledge, only making his presence known by leaving us edited recordings with only our good music =P

Take your point, but it's so interesting to watch, Paul. Shows how ideas take shape, and the feedback loop of expression. It's so different for different writers.

You can record--and later decide to release or not, right? Seeing famous writers' crappy early drafts helped me see the 10% inspiration/90% perspiration concept. Even better we see the pizza being made. Plus you show--as well as tell--#3. Thanks.

Can I ask if that happens on the YC application too? I’ve wondered if everything that gets typed gets saved?

When it was my code (up till about 2015) it certainly didn't. It's unlikely they'd have added added anything like that, because it would slow down application reading in exchange for little data of value. If they wanted to trade time for data, they'd add questions.
