To the extent that HN is still good, it's due to Daniel Gackle and Scott Bell, who've been running it since 2014. They work constantly both at hands-on moderation and writing (mostly invisible, but often very clever) software to make the site work better.

dang has been an incredible force in all kinds of ways, including maintaining good cultural hygiene/decorum, like a monk in the schoolyard. Many a hot head he has cooled simply by asking them to tone it down or stay polite.
