I would argue that email from the early Internet era (let’s say pre-Netscape) was a lot more like a cross between today’s email and Twitter. Plain text, shorter messages.
It would be fascinating if plain text was an important feature. But it could well be. That may be one area where Twitter has been right not to innovate.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Facebook is plaintext too. Plaintext lost the email battle (badly) but won the war.
