Simultaneously having a reasonable conversation with Saikat Chakrabarti by email while a series of angry people (presumably less informed than him about Ocasio-Cortez's policy) call me names on Twitter makes it clear how useless Twitter is for talking about anything complicated.

I wonder if there is something halfway between Twitter and email. I don't know what that would even look like, but there may be; I suspect only a small part of the space of possibilities for forums has been explored.

The sheer variety of suggestions here show just how little of that space has been explored. Possibly the answer is a meta-solution: a service whose explicit policy is to experiment and evolve rapidly, in contrast to the extreme conservatism of Twitter.

isn't a sort of "convervatism" inherent to these types of mediums since rapid experimentation constantly risks your main users suddenly defecting? (though any platform that can ditch the conservatism and simultaneously keep its users is probably very antifragile as a result)

Or - There isn’t much of a need outside of what exists and is good enough. Twitter + DM. You using email doesn’t stop the twitter noise.

On it! Will have one such conversational website ready soon. A map is highly integrated & there's a gradient of public & private settings. Conversations are organized in a way I haven't seen before but I won't spoil it just yet

Exacty. The end game of social media might be a global brain, and the way there might be via platforms that allow communities to design and select their own protocols, from content representation to incentivation, arbitration and monetization. Twitter may not know what it’s doing

Open source is the solution here for more rapid evolution and exploration. Not a panacea but it’s definitely the most likely path.

There are two primary forms of discourse. Discussion and dialogue. Debate occasionally takes place on Twitter while the later does not. Text lacks context so audio is required for dialogue. Discussion follows as a wrap around the dialogue.
