Try this though experiment: if the GOP found lowering taxes for the rich would only increase the debt and not grow the economy, would they stop wanting to lower taxes for the rich? I guess not. I think the desire to lower taxes precedes the choice of how to fix problems.
For sure many Republicans are guilty of the same sort of thing-- of cutting taxes for the sake of cutting taxes, without reference to how much we need.

Are you familiar with analyses that recent deficits are traceable back to the GWBush tax cuts? Simply going back to those tax rates would restore fiscal sanity, and likely defuse a lot of the talk of big tax increases.
