I wonder if there is something halfway between Twitter and email. I don't know what that would even look like, but there may be; I suspect only a small part of the space of possibilities for forums has been explored.

The sheer variety of suggestions here show just how little of that space has been explored. Possibly the answer is a meta-solution: a service whose explicit policy is to experiment and evolve rapidly, in contrast to the extreme conservatism of Twitter.

Recently experimenting with low blocking threshold to focus the convo (and reset block list every 3-4 months). Work theory: "complicated convo" on Twitter requires tuning like a radio frequency to find readers who accept, while "interestingly disagreeing", of the opposite view.
