That's hardly a shocking accusation. That's the definition of socialism: you tax first, then decide how to spend the money.
I think that's why so many people who wouldn't be directly affected by her tax increase are opposed to it. It's not that they're too stupid to realize they wouldn't be in the top tax bracket. They just don't like the underlying principle.
The concrete goal is to limit the disproportionate political power of the super wealthy. And the emotional appeal to “fairness” in response is that taxing the rich “isn’t fair”

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. 41% of Americans don't support increasing the taxes paid by people other than them.
It comes down to whether you think that income inequality is a problem in itself. The Gini ratio has been going up for 50 years in the US. I think it's better to Tax the rich today than hear calls for eating the rich in another 20 years of rising inequality.
But, for the record, I don't support the 70% top rate. I support raising the capital gains tax to the level of income tax and having a very high estate tax that's hard to evade and is enforced.
It goes deeper than spending money and don’t have a plan for it yet. It’s about wealth distribution. Society can’t be run “as a business with a P/L”. Instead you try to capture enough value to increase the wellbeing of all citizens. That’s potentially infinite.
Talk to more people. A great many really do not have a clue how marginal taxation works. Then again, I am in a red state.
