In college I used emacs. When I showed up in grad school, they had some computers on which control-x or control-s (I forget which) froze the screen. So I used vi while I waited for someone to show up that I could ask about this. I've used vi ever since.

In Let Over Lambda, Hoyt had an interesting take on why choose vi over emacs for Lisp. Something like, if I need a powerful syntax-aware (etc) tool to manipulate my code, that's a sign of my code not being elegant & concise-- better to use a lesser tool Disclaimer: I use emacs.
