In college I used emacs. When I showed up in grad school, they had some computers on which control-x or control-s (I forget which) froze the screen. So I used vi while I waited for someone to show up that I could ask about this. I've used vi ever since.

Control-s iirc and it's some control command (also took a very long time to figure it out)

You could use control-Q to unfreeze, and I think there was some stty command to remap the keys.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_flow_control#Representation …

Curious how your lisping went with that setup

vi is fine for Lisp. All I need specifically for Lisp is paren-bouncing.

I'm the only person in our CS class who uses Vim. Never tried emacs though. Vim is the best so far.

Emacs is good for Latex. For everything else, vi rules and is installed everywhere :)

vi is good for LaTeX too, as long as you install the right file mode. I have the julia file mode, which has LaTeX support (since julia supports the full unicode set for identifiers)

I started with emacs and went with vi for most of the years. I use emacs and vi but evil mode in emacs to use vi commands. Too handy, for the same reason. Sometimes you even have to remap the keyboard (happened once). Not that good
