Is that the reason? Doesn't make much sense because according to his statements all of US places are truck stop places? Still, even as a truck stop place, it's better than a desert.

I think there's also some criticism of how the practice of capitalism leaves no room for nice things that don't pay - eg trees, natural light

Breezewood is all about the restrooms and was intentionally different so they could force traveler revenue. It is a mess by design so people slow down providing brains an opportunity to think of inputs and outputs. It is a beautiful place off the road.

Frankly speaking to me it doesn't look like an ugly place. There are tons of places much uglier than this one .. go to developing nation's of Africa, Asia, you will find a lot many .. full of chaos, unmanageled traffic, stray animals, slums, street hawkers etc. It's all relative.
