On Twitter you can use retweet-with-comment as a test of this. You don't engage earnestly with someone by quote-tweeting them. Retweet-with-comment is a way to tell _other_ people (who already agree with you) "look what this idiot said."

I'm not saying retweet-with-comment per se is bad. There are good things you can do with it. It's just a bad way to engage with someone you disagree with.

Also a sign of being self-indulgent, rather than genuinely social... people who RT every compliment paid to them.

The opposite. If they engage with the other side, they prefer attention and to complain. If they want to change things, they do not lose time trying to talk people through it but go do things.

I tend to engage directly to change my own perspective of reality. If the other person wants to change, I think it needs to come from within. If you bombard someone with truths they are not yet ready for, is there a way to let them puzzle things together later on?

There is also the set of people who genuinely *want* to make things better but who feel like earnest engagement is a hopeless path

1/ I see two types of people who both genuinely want to make things better: 1) Empiricists, who want to learn new issues with their product/service so they can fix them 2) Scholasticists, who want to enroll others in their untested but emotionally-engaging narratives.

2/ when an Empiricist argues with a Scholasticist, they usually end up talking past each other, because they speak fundamentally different languages.

Can you be earnestly engaged if your goal is to "convert?" Imagine declaring that intent at the beginning of a conversation - it would not go well.

Some people want all three.
