Silicon Valley has a lot of wanna-be Yodas. But Paul Graham has always seemed like the real deal to me.
Thus, as I’ve never known @paulg to be wrong at this level before, I must simply assume that I am not understanding what he is saying.
Because this seems dangerously wrong.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1095993046276194304 …

There is no substitute for having a rich mental library of reference experiences - both failures and successes.

I shouldn't get any credit for this - just leveraging the excellent research from David Perkins and the Harvard

Math is similar. We don't start primary school math with number theory.
-
@TechnicalBard and yet math made sense to me only once I found a textbook that started with... number theory not that we should now make everyone all do it the other way instead but might be nice to have the option@paulg@EricRWeinstein

taught myself to program similarly. just started chugging away at it (from ground zero) and googled every problem that arose along the way. i glanced first at tutorials/textbooks but didn't get very far with them, got more bored than anything

Hi Paul. That’s great! But it’s great for a particular class of learners to which you belong. There is an entirely different classes of learners who learn primarily through abstraction. That’s my class. Your class calls my class learning disabled. We’re not. We’re super learners.

I couldn’t understand calculus or it’s problem sets. It was impossible. I could, however, understand “Advanced Calculus” or “Analysis on Manifolds” or “Exterior Differential Calculus” because of the ease I have with abstractions.

Everything is taught this way. Basic math comes long before set theory. Everybody learns to read and just talk about what you read before they start teaching formal literary criticism.
